In any case, based on recent conversation in the car I sat in, I will share one litmust test to separate cities that might excite you from the others gloomy piece of lands. The test can be sum up in one sentence:

“It’s ” + + ” Baby!”

Use the above term to test for various cities that might excite you. For example:

“It’s NYC Baby!”

If you feel that the sentence makes sense and rather apt, than probably it is.

However, change the city into something more dreadful:

“It’s Pittsburgh Baby!”

If you feel that all hope are lost and you want to give up on life upon hearing of uttering such sentence, indeed the city mentioned may not be for you.

Now I am wondering what the city of Vancouver is for me.

Flashback

Around month of May last year (2009), I was stranded in SF, missing my connecting flight to Singapore thanks to United Airline stupid delays involving malfunctioned toilet . Despite being in the city for only around twelve hours with Ms. Chiam and Mr. Tan, I was awed by all the nicer thing the city could offer: proper shuttle, superb airport (not as good as many airports in Asia though but close) and awesome weather. Promising myself that I will be back for a proper visit, as a tourist or otherwise, here I am.

ps: To be fair, I also visited SF before around August 2009 during my twelve hours transit (many thanks to SQ unreliable reservation system), meeting Mr. Teja, my primary school friends who enjoyed ever wonderful weather and fat salary, along the way. However, since its less than a day, I do not think its counted as proper visit.

Now

My travel itinerary is somewhat very sketchy. Not much plan involved in it – just hoping for the best like what happened on the first day (e.g. yesterday) where we went to Lombard St., Fisherman Wharf and nearby Pier 39.

My today’s plan? meeting Mr. Teja or rather Arya who are supposed to bring me around the town.

I do not think it is such a difficult thing to do. United States has .us. Small island nation like  Singapore has their own .sg. And in case some of you forget, even island smaller than Singapore (yes, there is such thing) called Tokelau has its famous .tk that contributes to more than 10% of country’s own GDP ;p

To be fair, ICANN has allocated a fair share of second level domain for this country of 200+ million people namely ac.id for academic institution, net.id for communication company, gov.id for government and so on and so on… but come on!!! they are ugly at its best.

Furthermore, from the perspective of usability and user friendly-ness, I believe 99% of the first timer could not distinguish com.id and co.id. One of them is wrong by the way. Of course, in this article, due to lack of time and fund, all numbers mentioned are result of power of groundless deduction, common wisdom of untested hypothesis and unrecorded observation, a.k.a. SMU-BS-Skill.

Why do  I suddenly I want to register top level .id domain? Cause I think there will be plenty more cute names that I could think of. Some of them are…

• <name>.id – useful to refer to your own website… say aditya.id
• <adjective>.id – for some added cool factor … e.g. hidden, nasty, smart
• my.id / ismy.id – for obvious reason
• cup.id – isn’t lovely
• pa.id - for some accounting application
• open.id – for hijacking some famous project

and so and so and so … and obviously the most apt domain name for Indonesia which ends with .id is…

• ma.id

Back to the real business, a friend of mine asked me:

“Do you keep yourself updated of what happened here?” – NNs, quote has been heavily modified (read: sanitized)

Apparently that friend of mine was amazed at how I immediate know about series of earthquakes that jolt Indonesia, Singapore’s new buzzwordz thatz involvedz SHINGZ and BOOMZ and of course superb juicy stories about  XYZ’s new relationship status and even more juicier stories about XYZ’s newer relationship status ;p

In short, I got plenty of ways to keep connected without actually spending too much time yet people still label me as stalker – especially when they could not comprehend how to do what I have done. Drats… I will discuss them later somehow but for this post, let’s keep it simple (read: I don’t have much time).

One of my favorite ways is Twitter.

To the uninitiated, Twitter is a digg-like site powered mostly by clueless individuals… millions of them who desperately want to share their 140 characters worth of wisdom.

(I really have something to do at 0246 in the morning so…)

How Do I Keep Myself Updated

Basically I only observe four columns

1. My friends
2. Anything that mentions my name
3. Anything that mentions “Indonesia”
4. Anything that mentions “Singapore”

From those four columns and occasional cursory checking, I could gather pretty much stuff that I want to know. Coupled with a bit of background knowledge and some sort of farfetch reasoning and rather flawed analytical skills, I could pretty much gather a lot of data to start a rather meaningful conversations*. Of course some discretion is needed to prevent me from reaching ‘creepy’ zone.

*ps: the one that does not involved “How are you?” and “How’s the weather there?”
